On the To-Do List: Holiday Countdown

If you are anything like me you will most likely have a large collection of magasines and catalogues that pile up - mostly read - - but a small pile of "need to reads" especially as the holidays draw near.  I can often be so inspired by a magazine and fall in love with some of the holiday spaces and ideas that are showcased that you will often find my magazines dog-eared and scribbled in - like a textbook used for studying.

One of the best things you can do with the images you love and find inspiring is to create a tear file. Ever heard of Tear Files? A tear file is your collection of images that are categorised into projects or shopping possibilities that have to do with Christmas and all that surrounds the holiday. You can do this electronically as well as you surf the web, or by using an amazing new site called Pinterest.  Set up folders for Food, Decorating, Fashion, Gift Giving, Projects. After your account is set up, you can attach an app to your mobile and access it while you are out and about.  If you are at the market, your app will lead you to your recipes and such.

You can also go through your stack of magasines and create files for your holiday projects. I keep files on my desk to hold my ideas.  And then at the end of the holiday, the successful tear sheets are stored in colourful binders in the scrapbook room.

The benefit to creating Tear Files and Binders is that it really helps you understand what you are planning and to keep track of what you have and what you need.  Most people will find they are continually drawn to the same projects and design scheme year after year. When it is time to start a project, you already know what you love and can reflect back and see lots of different pictures in maybe a similar style. Tear Files really help you identify a passing trend versus classic and timeless design.

Lastly, in order to get me started on this bustling season . . . I create a calendar of events that starts with today and runs through January 6th or Epiphany. I can fill this up as the events and holiday progresses.  Also - other household members can check to see what is planned - having all holiday appointments and events out front for all to see will help circumvent any last minute surprises!

Attached to a padfolio - I am organised beyond belief! Or am I?
